Hi all, just joined. I'm in vegas and we're forming an artists group here www.vegasartists.com
There's 1.5 million souls here and nobody seems to want to actually do anything, we're trying to change that in a positive way and have fun doing it. I'm looking for tribes of people who may have some expereience in 'herding cats' because some days that's how we feel. :-)
Just saying hi!

    Hey Cameron

I put this tribe out to get ideas on exactly the same thing. So far I have gotten some pretty good comments but we haven't really discussed concrete plans on how to set things up. You might want to check out Cell Space. IT s another tribe for a community art space in SF. They might have some ideas.

One of the big things is that you need to set up a structure of some kind (website at the very least) and have one or more somewhat rabid people out there contacting the arts types (creators and those who attend shows or buy stuff) to let them know what you are doing. With everything that we have to do in life nowadays to get by people forget really fast while caught up in their own stuff so you may have to remind and push some people to the edge of annoyance. (you may lose some this way but they weren't going to be of any help anyway)

Once they start going to the website on a regualr basis or see you groups name in enough places then it will start to register and the fun can begin. Check out some of the really old posts from when I first started this. As with the people that I have mentioned I am caught up in my own shit right now but I think that there are some good ideas back there.

    Peace.

Thanks for the reply Andy. I'll check those other groups out. So far we're doing okay. Our main concern is that we don't bite off more than we can handle and implode from within, baby steps. Right now, there's 3 of us doing this, and we've made some great strides in getting local artists together and creating community.

But we still are having major problems getting people involved. Everyone seems to want to be entertained, and not actually make stuff happen. So we just keep plugging along and doing things and promoting them and hoping that some people show up.

One thing we've found that helps is taking pictures and posting them, like our Santa Rampage back in July. It's almost like we're telling people "see what you missed? come out next time!". And we realize that there's a line between reminding people of an event, and being a pest. But like you said, the people who are annoyed probably won't ever get involved anyway so to heck with them.

This is a lot of work, but it's worth it because when it happens we're going to have a great scene here, and there is none right now.

Yeah I hope to get something moving here as well. Columbus has a really big Arts community. If it could just be organized and more connected we could do some great stuff. The original ideas that I came up with for this site were on a grand scale and right now I would be hard put to do anything other than small scale so fo now getting to know like minded people will have to be where I start.

        Later.

For us the MAIN issue is and has been, finding the core group of people to plan and execute events. Without the core it's all pipe dreams. For instance we still need a head carpenter, electrician, and legal help. But there's the catch 22: how to get people involved when nothing is happening?

This means a lot of work that we do ourselves, and just suck it up and keep doing it. It's almost like, if people THINK that something cool is happening than it probably is. And they start showing up, and presto, it's cool.

But the danger of DIY is, that we bust our asses and get dissapointed thinking no one cares and burn out (implosion). We are very focused on not getting discouraged and remininding ourselves why we started doing this in the first place. It's a matter of focus and stamina, but then, weren't most great things?
