A woman I know who has home schooled all 4 of her kids does what she calls Radical Unschooling. They don't follow a specific program like you would find in a school. They do projects instead that encompass all of the different things that they would learn through classes. Her oldest daugghter created her own country and everything that goes with it. It had it's own history, geography, religion, even a simple language that she created. No it did not give her all of the facts that she would need to pass the standardized tests but she did. Why? Maybe it was because she also read alot for fun because her mom had found a way to instill in her a genuine love and enthusiasm for learning and using her imagination. She was taking college classes by her junior year. Anyone know of any other interesting things to help encourage these traits in our children? We do alot of craft products with my 5 year old and have our own stage and homemade puppets for shows. She loves to make up songs and wants to write her own stories to perform. A very dramatic kid.

Peace.

I would suggest you ask the child what else she is intersted in, then match lessons to her interest. Ie if she is into rainbows then rainbow myths, write her own stories and myths, make rainbows with a hose and talk about how it works, go look at an encyclopedia etc. There is a lot you can do. I have quite a few references so maybe i will come across something....

Thanks Jasmine. She is really into making up stories and songs. I am in the process of making a puppet theater for her now. Somehting of wood since we always destroy the cardboard ones too quickly.

      Peace.
